To Catch the Sun

To Catch the Sun

By: Belladonna

You’re chasing the sun but it’s sinking further into the horizon.

Your feet pound against the ground

Just climb a little faster, a little harder, watch your step.

Ants and slugs scurry away and stray soil jumps at your ankles

Run quicker, quicker, until you reach the edge of the cliff.

Your breath is dry and your bones are sore

No matter – keep pushing.

But the sun is gone now, and try as you may have, you didn’t catch it.

If only you’d ran faster, jumped higher, gripped harder

If only, if only, if only, if-

Only, you remember that the sun comes back tomorrow.

You’ll be here tomorrow

Waiting to catch the sun.
